PD Dr. med. Stephan Arens

PD Dr. Stephan Arens did his training at the medical faculty of RWTH Aachen and the University of Montpellier, France. He received his doctoral degree from RWTH Aachen and started his orthopedic / traumatological training after registration with the British Medical Council 1988 in Brighton, GB as an SHO. From 1988 – 1989 this was continued at the Otago University Hospital, Dunedin, New Zealand.           
From 10/1989 to 9/1994 he did a comprehensive surgical training as scientific and clinical assistant at the medical faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (Prof. Dr. A. Hirner) with board certification in surgery in 1994. After his residency in trauma- and reconstructive surgery at Bonn University (Prof. Dr. M. Hansis) he received his board certification for traumatology in 1997. He was than senior registrar at the department of traumatology of Bonn University until 8/1999.

During this time he developed a special interest for adapted surgical techniques for developing countries and spent several working visits with NGO`s in African countries (Angola, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana).

As an endorsement of his long standing clinical focus in implant-surgery and treatment of bone and joint infections PD Dr. Arens did extensive research in this field of orthopaedic trauma. He started his experimental research 1994 as a research fellow at the renowned AO/ASIF-Research Institute (Prof. Perren) at Davos, Switzerland and continued this scientific cooperation in the years to follow. In 1999 he received his venia legendi in orthopedic trauma surgery at Bonn University for his scientific work on implant associated bone and soft tissue infection.

In 1999 he changed to the University-Hospital “Bergmannsheil”, Ruhr-University, Bochum (Prof. Dr. G. Muhr), which is one of the largest trauma units in Germany and well known as the first hospital in the world founded in 1890 especially for orthopaedic trauma patients. He worked there as a senior clinical registrar and received his board certification for physio- / physical therapy  as well as for orthopedics and special traumatology. From 2003 – 2005 he was 1st senior registrar and permanent representative of the chairman of the department.

Since 1.1.2006 PD Dr. Arens is chief of the department of orthopedics, trauma- and reconstructive surgery in the HELIOS Hospital Siegburg, Germany.

  • Outpatient trauma and orthopedic surgery for all patients suffering from accident or work-related disorders affecting the musculoskeletal system
  • Authorized by the German institutions for statutory accident insurance and prevention to treat industrial and occupational injuries (accident insurance consultant procedure) as well as to care for the seriously injured (emergency trauma procedures, section 6 VAV) on behalf of the statutory accident insurance institutions
