Priv. - Doz. Dr. med. Joachim Kai Seifert

PD Dr. Seifert received his medical and surgical training at the Department of general and visceral surgery at the University hospital of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.
He was scientific and clinical assistant in surgery from 1993 until he received his board certification in surgery in 2000. During this time his scientific focus was in the treatment of liver tumours. He visited the Harvard University in Boston, USA and spent one year at the University of New South Wales St. George Hospital in Sydney, Australia in 1998 to gain knowledge on the field of local tumour ablation in the liver. After returning to Mainz University, the clinical program of local liver tumour ablation was started and a large number of patients were treated in the following years.
In January 2001 he received the venia legendi for surgery (Cryotherapy in oncologic surgery).
In June 2001 he was appointed consultant for surgery in the University of Mainz and was leading the special field of endocrine surgery (thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery) until 2003. During this time, he established the technique of neuromonitoring for recurrent nerve preservation in thyroid surgery in Mainz University hospital.
As a consequence of his long lasting scientific interest in liver surgery and oncologic surgery he took over the lead of the subspecialty of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery in January 2003 and continued his focus on oncologic surgery. In February 2003 he received his subspecialty certification for visceral surgery. Since 2003 he also was the substitute for the chair in surgery, Prof. Th. Junginger, at the University Hospital Mainz.
Since April 2007 he ist chief of the department of general and visceral surgery in the HELIOS Hospital Siegburg, Germany.

Department of General and Visceral Surgery

Scope of treatment:
Our department focuses on surgery of the abdominal cavity and of the thyroid glands and soft tissue surgery.

Medical staff:
Our patients are treated by the Head of Department, two senior physicians and five residents (of which four are specialists). All the doctors on the team have several years’ clinical and surgical experience. A specialist always takes part in every operation, even in all emergency procedures at any time of the day or night. Highly experienced nurses, many with additional qualifications, provide support for the surgeons.

The department:
The Department of General and Visceral Surgery provides care for more than 2,000 patients each year in 50 beds in three wards. In the new interdisciplinary intensive care ward, with its state-of-the-art equipment, seven beds are available to the surgical departments working in cooperation with the anesthetists. The surgical procedures, which number around 2,000 a year, are conducted in the Central Operating Theaters, where 2 theaters are generally used by General Surgery. The operating theaters are fitted with all the equipment necessary for the procedures that are to be carried out, including modern equipment for minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic operations) and ultrasound-OP instruments. The central outpatients department has recently been fitted with new rooms, and it is here that the Department takes care of its patients before they have been admitted and after they have been discharged as well as the accident and emergency patients requiring general surgery; it also conducts outpatient procedures and operations here. For these, the Department can make use of all the modern diagnostic equipment of the entire hospital, including computer tomography, MRI, (duplex) ultrasonography, endoscopy, angiography, laboratories, etc. Thanks to the Department’s participation in internal and external quality assurance programs, the professional and proper treatment of out patients is regularly monitored and confirmed.
