Breast Cancer (Mammary Carcinoma)

Breast cancer is the most common disease in women in Germany. However, in very rare cases, men can also suffer from breast cancer. The disease risk increases with age from the age of 30. In addition to age, other risk factors are familial factors such as breast cancer in relatives, excess weight, late pregnancy or childlessness and, in some cases, specific identifiable genetic factors. Early detection through intensive self-examination, regular checks by a gynecologist and mammograms at recommended intervals are hugely important. The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the chances of full recovery.

In breast cancer treatment, close collaboration between different specialist areas (Gynecology, Oncology, Radiology, Pathology, Psychotherapy, Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation) at our certified breast cancer center is essential for the most successful treatment.

Diagnosis and Therapy

• Physical examination and investigation of medical history (anamnesis)
• Mammogram (analogue mammogram, digital mammogram)
• Sonography (ultrasound examination)
• Magnetic resonance mammogram
• Invasive diagnostic procedures (fine needle aspiration, fine needle biopsy, vacuum-assisted biopsy, stereotaxy, mammotomy) 

Therapy

• Operation (depending on the findings: lumpectomy, in which only the tumor tissue from the breast and the lymph nodes in the armpit are removed, or a mastectomy, in which the entire breast with the tumor inside it is removed)
• Breast reconstruction (with non-human [silicone pads] or human material [muscle tissue from the torso with the skin covering it])
• Receptor diagnosis
• Radiotherapy
• Hormone therapy
• Therapy with antibodies (her-2-protein, Trastuzumab)
